Hole 1

The first is a long par four of 423 yards often played into the prevailing wind. An opening drive will have to be well placed to avoid a large fairway bunker and to give any chance of reaching the green in two. For the last 190 yards the fairway rises to an elevated green, guarded by two more bunkers. It is not until the last few yards that players can actually see the hole. From the back tee the 10th deserves a stroke index one grading at 451 yards.

Hole 2

Measuring just under 400 yards the second returns towards the clubhouse. From the medal tees the best line is just short of the deep bunker, taking care to avoid the tree-lined right hand side of the fairway. A drive that goes too far left will inevitably find the rough making for a very difficult approach to the green over a large oak tree. Care needs to be taken when a drive goes over the trees onto the first fairway.

Hole 3

The third is a relatively short par four of just 322 yards. It features a stream and small pond to catch the poorly-struck drive with two bunkers to the left and the main Meliden Road to the right. An accurate drive is required to hit the middle of the fairway. Again an accurately-struck short iron is needed to avoid the trees and bunkers that guard the green. On the back nine the 12th tee is tight up against the road adding extra pressure to the hole.

Hole 4

The fourth is the shortest hole at St Melyd at just 112 yards. The narrow two-tier green is probably the tightest on the course and features bunkers to the front, left, and right.

Hole 5

The fifth measures 439 yards and runs parallel to a country walkway that was once a railway line. This very challenging par four features a sloping fairway that draws all but the best-struck drives into the semi-rough. The approach shot is made more difficult by the close out-of-bounds to the right and the bunkers to the left.

Hole 6

At 177 yards the sixth is a par three played to an elevated and undulating green guarded by a deep bunker to the right and a copse of trees to the left. A sliced tee-shot is definitely not the way to play this hole as the disused railway line awaits! Playing from the 15th tee the hole extends to over 200 yards. A par three or better here is a real achievement.

Hole 7

The seventh is a 500 yard right dog-leg par five. It presents the good golfer with an excellent birdie chance providing their tee-shot avoids the large left side bunker and finds the fairway. However find the rough and the hole will play its full-length. Take time to enjoy the magnificent view over Prestatyn and the coastline.

Hole 9

The tee-shot here is blind played towards a steeply-rising fairway. The line is down the centre right hand side which then offers the best approach position to the green, avoiding the fairway bunkers on the left. A promising medal card can be spoilt by the tricky bunkers on either side of the green.
